What Led to the Invasion
Before World War I, Danzig (currently Gdansk) was part of Germany, but was lost after the War. Danzig after World War I fell in the boarders of Poland, but was a free city (it didn't belong to Poland or Germany). Most of the people there spoke German and Danzig was a Polish trading port. Germany requested that Poland allow Germany to build a road from Germany to Danzig and Danzig be returned to Germany. Leaders of Europe denied this request knowing that if they gave in, Hitler would just demand more. England and France swore to defend Poland if attacked by Germany.
Britain and France had anticipated that Poland would be Hitler's next topic...
